It is a forced bet posted by the player sitting two positions to the left of the dealer button before the start of each hand. The big blind is typically twice the amount of the small blind and is one of the two forced bets that initiate the betting action in many poker games.

Example

In a game with a 10/20 blind structure, the player sitting two positions to the left of the dealer button posts the big blind, which is 20.
